Following the success of last years City Heart Week, we are pleased to announce that we will be running this event again this year. Again, cardiologists and healthcare specialists around the City of London are joining together to raise awareness of heart health.
One focus is on Atrial Fibrillation and stroke. Up to 1% of the population is affected by Atrial Fibrillation, the most common heart rhythm condition. Atrial Fibrillation and high blood pressure are both risk factors for stroke.
When someone becomes uncomfortably aware of their heart beating it is often described as ‘palpitation’ but can also indicate the presence of Atrial Fibrillation or other abnormal heart rhythms.
There are a small number of rare arrhythmias which can be dangerous, however more commonly they are basically troublesome and unpleasant rather then being dangerous.
The key is early recognition of Atrial Fibrillation so it can be appropriately treated. The simplest way is to feel your pulse. An irregular pulse is a sign of Atrial Fibriallation. If you have an irregular pulse you should have an ECG recorded, an ECG is a simple heart tracing which only takes a few minutes. In conjunction with a detailed palpitation questionnaire this can help to diagnose arrhythmia.

An ECG will be performed if your symptoms are indicative of arrhythmia. The checks will be provided subject to availability, on a ‘first come, first served’ basis (between 8:00am and 6:00pm), and London Bridge Hospital cannot guarantee that you will receive a check should you apply for one.
You must be 18 years or older to apply and acceptance will be subject to London Bridge Hospital’s usual registration requirements, including acceptance of the ‘Terms of Admission’, a copy of which will be provided to you at your request.
