Following the success of last years City Heart Week, we are pleased to announce that we will be running this event again this year. Again, cardiologists and healthcare specialists around the City of London are joining together to raise awareness of heart health.

One focus is on palpitation and arrhythmia, a condition that affects up to a million adults in the UK.

When someone becomes uncomfortably aware of their heart beating it is often described as ‘palpitation’ but can also indicate the presence of an abnormal heart rhythm ‘arrhythmia’.

There are a small number of rare arrhythmias which can be dangerous, but more commonly they can be troublesome and unpleasant but not dangerous.

The key to successful treatment of an arrhythmia is diagnosis, such as recording an ECG (Electrocardiogram) during an attack. An ECG is a simple heart tracing which is taken only a few minutes. In conjunction with a detailed palpitation questionnaire this can help to diagnose arrhythmia. The most common arrhythmia in the UK is Atrial Fibrillation and this affects about 500,000 people.

Throughout City Heart Week we are offering free heartbeat checks to people who think they have symptoms. The check should take no more than 20 minutes and is carried out at 31 Old Broad Street.

If you are a GP or health professional in the City and would like posters or patient leaflets, then please contact us on 08444 121912.
